days ex-Delhi
|
This
itinerary is for Corbett fans and includes some of the principal
locations where Jim tracked man-eating tigers in the Kumaoni
hills. Thak and Chuka are where Jim Corbett hunted 2 man-eating
tigers in the 1930’s. The area is little changed since
then, and makes a fascinating trek for Corbett fans, or anyone
interested in a remote area of forested mountains that is
rarely visited by outsiders. The Sarda River cuts through
the area, forming the border with Nepal, and contains some
excellent spots for mahseer fishing.
The trek to Chuka
and Thak includes 2 days’ trail walking through hill
forests with 1 night camping en route, camping by the Sarda
River near Chuka village, and 1 day trekking out via the
Sarda Gorge or Ladhya River You will find the scenery breathtaking,
the traditional village life fascinating, and well worth
the effort of trekking! |

| BINSAR/JAGESHWAR,
Tour F |
9 days ex-Delhi
|
At
an altitude of 2412 metres/7913 feet, Binsar is a forested
ridge 34 km northeast of Almora. The views of the high Himalaya
from here are spectacular. The surrounding protected oak
and rhododendron forests form the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary,
which is famous for its bird life.
Accommodation
here is in a comfortable guest house, Deodars, which has
3 rooms available. Most visitors will probably wish to
combine a visit to Binsar with a trip to Jageshwar, which
is a 2-hour drive from here.
Jageshwar
is a small village and ancient temple
complex, picturesquely situated amongst deodar trees in
a deep valley about 32
km east of Almora. The temples dates from the Katyuri dynasty
(8th century) to the Chand dynasty (18th century), and
are amongst the most archaeologically significant in the
Himalaya. If you climb the 3 km trail up the steep ridge
to Old Jageshwar through the oak and pine forest, you are
rewarded with magnificent views of the Nanda Devi massif.
Along the trail you will meet the picturesque Pahari people,
who use the forest trails to get to and from their traditional
farmsteads. |
